Ahhh the first Saturday in May. Such a wonderful time of year. The Kentucky Derby is one of my favorite events that signifies a sign of warmer weather ahead.
The race reminds me a little about investing. There are the investments (like the horse) and the investor (like the jockey). Of course, you want a fast horse but one that doesn’t get out too quickly and fades away late in the race. You also don’t want a horse that starts out too slowly, running the risk of falling too far behind, even with world class closing speed.
In horse racing, much like investing, consistency is key. Balancing a decent start with a good finish is critical. And then there’s the jockey. The jockey’s ability to remain calm despite all the stress and commotion surrounding him is crucial. A jockey that makes panicked decisions could sabotage even the fastest of horses.
So this Saturday, I hope you’ll take some time to watch the fastest 2 minutes in sports. I also hope, like an experienced jockey, you’ll remain calm on the investing journey.
